I generally do not recommend anyone to buy Bitcoin. Instead, I encourage people to learn about Bitcoin and make their own decision. People generally dismiss Bitcoin superficially by saying it has no intrinsic value and I want to invest only in real companies.
Bitcoin is a paradigm shift in thinking about money, investment, and savings. A lot of people think that Bitcoin is a bubble. It takes time to learn how it works and conclude that bubbles do not last for 15 years. If something has gone up 10,000 times in value in 12 years and presidents are talking about it, then there is something about it.
After reading all these books, if you still think that it’s not worth your time or attention, that’s completely up to you. No one is forcing anyone to invest in certain things. But I can definitely recommend it and it’s your choice to accept or ignore that recommendation.
Here are the 10 books that changed the way I look at the world (not just Bitcoin):
1. The Bitcoin Standard - by Saifedean Ammous
I heard about Bitcoin in 2013 when it was around $100. Then I completely ignored it. I did not know how to buy it or where to buy it from. I got busy with life, became a father, and had job changes, wanted to start a business, and changed homes and cities and it completely slipped out of my radar. Then I noticed it once it was $600. Ignored it again.
Around 2020 March, Bitcoin was at $6,000. I thought it was going to zero. Then by the end of 2020, Bitcoin went on a parabolic bull run. I couldn’t ignore it anymore. That’s when I started reading the Bitcoin Standard. I learned about Bitcoin halvings, 4-year price cycles, how wallets work with 256-bit encryption, and how Bitcoin could become the world’s reserve currency. Since then there has not been any looking back. I started saving a little bit in Bitcoin.
You can also Safedean on YouTube. He talks about the concepts in his book in his videos and podcasts. If you are going to read just one book on Bitcoin, read this book.
2. Mastering Bitcoin - by Andreas M.Antonopoulos
Mastering Bitcoin is the 2nd book you should read. Andreas Antonopoulos is a legend in the Bitcoin space. You can watch a few of his YouTube videos to get an idea about him.
He talks about how the wallets work, how the blockchain works, how miners confirm transactions on the blockchain, and how the network is the most secure computing network in the world. The book gets very technical towards the later parts and I was not able to understand anything myself.
However, if you want to become a Bitcoin developer, this is the best book to start with. You will learn about elliptic curve cryptography, public keys, private keys, and so on. I have not read this book from start to end, however, I keep reading about it here and there and see if something sinks in.
3. Bitcoin Evangelism - by Brian E. De Mint
Bitcoin Evangelism is for beginners and talks about Bitcoin and money in a very simple way. Our money system is broken and doesn’t serve all of us equally. Our money keeps getting inflated and to protect our savings we are forced to invest in stocks, real estate, and gold.
Bitcoin Evangelism takes you through a journey of the history of money itself. Talks about the properties of money. We all work hard to make money but we don’t understand money. Bitcoin is a solution to a problem and you will not understand the solution unless you understand the problem.
Our financial system is a credit-based system and it’s very fragile. When there is a recession the central banks have to do QE (quantitative easing) to “stimulate” the economy else everything starts falling apart. You will also learn about the gold standard, central banks, and global trade settlements between countries.
4. The Bullish Case for Bitcoin - by Vijay Boyapati
Clearly and concisely, Boyapati presents the theory of money, the anatomy of Bitcoin, the reasons it is superior to the gold and fiat standards that came before it, and the promise that it offers to human civilization.
He describes path dependence and the trajectory of a newly monetizing asset in terms the layman can understand, and he addresses the concerns that most commonly arise as newcomers struggle to comprehend the essence and significance of this first digital monetary network.
5. The Book Of Satoshi - by Phil Champagne
Like the currency he created, the identity of Bitcoin’s creator Satoshi Nakamoto is virtual, existing only online. The Nakamoto persona, which may represent an individual or a group, exists only in the online publications that introduced and explained Bitcoin during its earliest days.
Here, collected and professionally published for the first time are the essential writings that detail Bitcoin’s creation. Included are:
Satoshi Nakamoto's Emails and Posts on Computer Forums Presented in Chronological Order
Bitcoin Fundamentals Presented in Layman’s Terms
Bitcoin’s Potential and Profound Economic Implications
The Seminal Paper Which Started It All
Even if you do not read all these books, follow these authors on X and YouTube. You will learn a lot. I am not asking you to invest in Bitcoin. I am only asking you to invest time in understanding Bitcoin and then make your own decision. Do not dismiss it without learning about it. You will regret it in the future.
