Great read, Deepak. Thanks for pulling back the curtain on this myth!
Most so-called “passive” income requires a ton of upfront work and consistent oversight.
It’s easy to get lured by the idea of revenue flowing in while you sleep, but your reminder that real passive income is more about systems and mindset really hits home. It’s not magic. It’s labor, strategy, and sometimes even luck.
In my own case, after years of freelancing and building niche sites, I finally gained some breathing room. But even now, I keep active with client work to stay sharp and secure a safety net. The “passive” part kicks in only after the systems are set up.
It’s entirely about the massive effort you pour into building the system upfront.
Whether it’s me grinding to build the capital, or you setting up online funnels and driving sales—it all demands a massive upfront investment of work, time, and deep study.
There is absolutely nothing passive about the starting line.
Building that initial momentum is brutal, and accumulating the capital is just as hard.
But once you actually have those assets in place, you finally get to leverage them to buy yourself flexibility.
Momentum is difficult to create, but once it's running, it’s a hell of a lot easier to keep going.
Spot on, Deepak. "Passive income" without upfront capital is a total illusion, and anyone selling the "beach lifestyle" from scratch is lying to you.
I ground for 20 years straight, working 2 to 3 jobs at once, saving every single penny until the point of sheer frustration.
I didn't chase internet hacks.
I took all those hard-earned savings and dumped them straight into a rental property and a dual-mandate portfolio—specifically utilizing covered call ETFs for immediate monthly cash flow compound.
Today, that system gives me my time and geo-freedom.
But it took me two decades of active sacrifice to buy that passivity.
For anyone still working a 9-to-5 or building a side hustle, you absolutely should build an investing layer on the side. And to do so, dividends or covered-call etf are the closest true hands off passive system I either find.
But stop expecting a free ride.
If your side hustle doesn't have capital behind it, it’s just another job that constantly demands your input—marketing, customer relations, product design, you name it.
It can scale, but it won't run itself. At best, you can work remotely.
True passivity requires capital. Period. You either sweat for 20 years to buy your assets, or you keep renting your success.
